Oct. 3, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2007 fall softball season kicked off Tuesday afternoon as the Sun Devils hosted the second-annual Sun Devil Fall Tournament against Mesa Community College and Central Arizona Community College, with the day seeing the Sun Devils score 16 runs and the defense shutting out both MCC and CACC to give the Sun Devils the tournament win.

In the first game of the day, ASU took on Mesa Community College, with freshman, Megan Elliott taking to the mound in her first appearance for the Sun Devils since making the Junior USA Softball team. Elliott came out to blank MCC, and also hit a three run shot over the left field wall as the Sun Devils rallied to beat MCC 15-0.

In game two on the day the Central Arizona Vaqueras came out to blank MCC 5-0 before heading to game three against the Sun Devils where the Vaqueras hung tough, but Katie Burkhart kept the reigns tight on Central Arizona as she threw a complete game one-hit shutout. The junior left hander struck out 10 and did not give up a hit after the Vaqueras leadoff batter singled safely to start the game.

ASU rolled on to beat CACC 1-0 to win the second-annual Sun Devil Fall Tournament. The Sun Devils will hit the field again October 12 as they host Central Arizona Community College and the Hum Babe Cats in their second fall mini tournament. The first game of ASU vs. Central Arizona is slated to kick off at 3 p.m. with games following at 5 and 7 p.m.
