Bears Win Doubles Tournament in Bronco Classic

SANTA CLARA - The team of sophomores Carsten Thorstensen and Nicolai Horgen won the doubles tournament at the Bronco Classic on Sunday. The Golden Bears defeated two tandems from UCSD on the final day of the event at the Degheri Tennis Center. They beat Stephen Oechel and Seth Spector, 8-6, in the finals. They advanced to the championship round after eliminating Ramesh Thondapu and Kazumi Negishi, 9-7.

Thorstensen and Horgen were one of two Cal teams participating in the two doubles tournaments. The duo of sophomore Geoff Chizever and senior John Pettit advanced to the finals of the other doubles tournament. They lost in the title round to Eric Roberson and Piotr Dilaj of Boise State, 9-8 (2). In the semifinals, the Bears beat Stanford's Paul Morrissey and Eric McKean, 8-4.

Cal returns to the courts on Oct. 20 for the Wilson/ITA Regionals at Stanford. The event takes place from Oct. 20-24.
