Tanner Gardner Tabbed Fifth in Preseason W.I.N. Rankings

Oct. 12, 2006

Newton, Iowa - Stanford junior Tanner Gardner came in at No. 5 at 125 pounds in the first Wrestling International Newsmagazine rankings released yesterday. The rankings are based on input from collegiate wrestling coaches and reflect the anticipated best individual wrestlers for the 2006-07 season.

Gardner enters his redshirt junior season as one of the best wrestlers in Stanford history. He became Stanford's 12th All-American in 2006, with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. Entering the tournament as the No. 12 seed, the Berryton, Kans. native went 4-3 at the championships and earned the first All-America honor since Matt Gentry won the NCAA Championship in 2004. Gardner finished his redshirt sophomore season with a 37-13 record and a No. 12 Intermat ranking.

This year, Gardner will look to become just the second Stanford wrestler to earn multiple All-America honors, as former Stanford coach Chris Horpel is the only two-time All-American in Cardinal history. Gardner and the Cardinal will host wrestle-offs on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m., followed by the season-kickoff dinner at 5 p.m. Competition begins Nov. 4 at the Avalon Duals in Edinboro, Pa.
