Cal Host to ITA Regional Qualifier
Oct. 18, 2006
HOME SWEET HOME: The California women's tennis team returns to Berkeley for the second fall tournament to be hosted by the Golden Bears. The ITA Regional Qualifer will take place at the Hellman Tennis Center from Oct. 20-23. The Bears, who ended last season ranked No. 13, will be heading home with some momentum from their first home tournament, the Cal Invitational, and the All-American Championships.CAL IN THE REGIONALS A YEAR AGO: Cal is hoping this year's regional plays out similarly to the 2005 edition. Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor won the singles tournament with a victory over Stanford's Theresa Logar, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to claim the 2005 ITA Northwest Regional title. In doubles, the Bears tandem of sophomore Bojana Bobusic and junior Marion Ravelojaona reached the semifinals.
A LOOK BACK AT THE SAINT MARY'S INVITATIONAL: Junior Daron Moore and freshman Nina Henkel won the doubles tournament with an 8-1 victory over Aude Lambert and Jesscia Hoath of Saint Mary's. In singles, Henkel reached the semifinals, continuing her strong fall campaign. She currently holds a 5-2 singles record for the fall, with one defeat at the hands of teammate Fodor in the Cal Invitational. Henkel and sophomore Claire Ilcinkas both received a first-round bye in the tournament. Ilcinkas picked up one win before getting eliminated in the quarterfinals. Following her first-round defeat, Moore earned a singles victory in the consolation quarterfinals before losing in the next round.
DYNAMIC DUO: Henkel has been just as impressive, if not better, in doubles action this fall. Her and Moore have formed a formidable duo, posting a 7-1 record. Before winning four-straight matches to take the doubles title at the Saint Mary's Invitational, the pair won three matches to advance to the finals of the Cal Invitational. Although they lost in the finals, they lost to worthy opponents in Fodor and junior Susie Babos. Cal should have a strong one-two punch this season with Babos and Fodor as one pair and Henkel and Moore as the other.
BABOS REACHING NEW HEIGHTS: Babos is on a roll since her national title run in May. She is currently on a 15-match winning streak, and became the first player in 11 years to reach all three national finals. Besides the NCAA Championships and the All-American's, Babos advanced to the finals of the 2004 ITA National Indoor Championships as a freshman. Babos won five matches in four days at the All-American Championships, including victories over four players ranked in the top 40 of the Fila national singles rankings.
