Stanford to Host Wilson/ITA Regional Tennis Championship

Palo Alto, CA - Stanford University will host the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Region Men's Regional Championships October 20-24 at the Taube Tennis Center. The event will include the top players from 15 schools in the Nortwest Region. For more information and daily results regarding this tournament go to the following:

Winners Advance: The singles and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus. Only the singles and doubles champions (and not the singles finalists) from the men's ITA Western Region North (Stanford) and South (Pepperdine) Championships are given automatic berths into the ITA National Intercollegiates.

The Participants: In addition to host Stanford University, this event will feature the top players from Division I schools: Stanford, Cal Poly, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, Cal, Washington, Santa Clara, Pacific, Oregon, Gonzaga, Hawaii, USF, UC Davis, Fresno State and Nevada. This week's top seeds are: 1. Alex Slovic (Washington), 2. Pierre Mouillon (Cal), 3. Andreas Weber (Hawaii), 4. Jakub Chech (Fresno State) 5. Patrik Fischer (Washington), 6. Kalim Stewart (Cal), 7. Richard Wire (Stanford), 8. Daniel Chu (Washington).

Regional Championships: Eighteen Wilson/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.

The National Indoor Championships: The 2006 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events - the Riviera/ITA Women's and Polo Ralph Lauren Men's All-American Championships - were held earlier this month, and the third event is season-ending NCAA Championships in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.

About the Cardinal: Stanford will have a contingent of nine players competing in the tournament, including Kevin Kaiser, Phil Kao, Eric McKean, Paul Morrissey, Blake Muller, Chris Rasmussen, David Ryan, Richard Wire, and Jeff Zeller. The Cardinal last competed at the Bronco Classic in Santa Clara, Oct. 6-8. Rasmussen advanced to the 'B' flight singles finals and the Cardinal's doubles team of McKean and Morrissey reached the semifinals of the 'A' flight doubles division. Wire, a freshman from Essex, England, is Stanford's top-seeded player in this weekend's tournament as he earned a No. 7 seed and is No. 125 in the ITA collegiate tennis preseason rankings. Other Stanford seeds in this week's tournament include Muller, the No. 9 seed in singles and No. 7 in doubles with Morrissey. In action as well is the doubles team of McKean and Wire, seeded No. 6. Matt Bruch, who is not participating in this tournament due to injury, is No. 10 in the ITA collegiate tennis preseason rankings. James Wan will also miss the tournament, but is No. 47 in the ITA collegiate tennis preseason rankings.
