Bears Off To Strong Start in Wilson/ITA Regional

Oct. 20, 2006

STANFORD - The first day of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional saw a strong showing by the California men's tennis team at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the Stanford campus on Friday. Six Golden Bears advanced to the round of 32.

After receiving a first-round bye, junior Pierre Mouillon continued his winning ways, as he defeated Achem Christner of Saint Mary's in close battle, 7-5; 7-6(5). Mouillion, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, earned his ninth win of the fall.

Senior Daniel Sebescen, junior Ken Nakahara, sophomores Eoin Heavey and Nicolai Horgen and freshman KJ Stewart were the other Bears to advance to the round of 32. Like Mouillon, Sebescen and Stewart each had first-round byes. The No. 10 seed Sebescen had the most trouble with his second round match out of all Cal players. He knocked off Oregon's Gustavo Loza, 6-4; 7-5. Stewart, who came into the event as the No. 6 seed had no problem with his second round opponent. He beat Holden Ching of Washington, 6-2; 6-1.

Nakahara, the No. 17 seed breezed through the first two rounds, as he defeated Darryn Young of Cal Poly, 6-3; 6-0, in the first round and Washington's David Chu, 6-2; 6-4, in the round of 64.

Senior John Pettit, and sophomores Geoff Chizever and Carsten Thorstensen each won their first round match, but were later beaten in the following round.

In doubles action, the Bears weren't as successful, dropping two of the three matches. The duo of Heavey and Stewart got the lone doubles win, as they got the best of Gabe Kanzelmeyer and Guerin Smith of Nevada, 8-2.

The Northwest Regional continues tomorrow and goes through Tuesday.
