PULLMAN, Wash. - No. 18 California held a commanding shot advantage but lost to Washington State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field. The Golden Bears dropped to 8-4-4 (1-3-2 Pac-10), while the Cougars improved to 8-5-3 (3-1-1).
Washington State scored two goals in the span of 19 seconds in the first half to secure their first win over the Bears since 2002. At 18:03, Allison Scurich put the Cougars ahead 1-0 by converting a 36-yard free kick that deflected off of the left post.
Kiersten Dallstream added an insurance goal for WSU shortly afterwards with an 18-yard shot to the far post, taken from the right side. Cal freshman goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini held the Cougars in check during her 45 minutes of action in the second half.
Cal held a 15-8 shot advantage, including a 10-2 edge in the second half, but couldn't capitalize on its opportunities.
Freshman midfielder Kelly Menachof, who netted two goals in Cal's 4-1 triumph over Washington Friday, continued her offensive mindset today for the Bears. However, she couldn't score on her three shots, including two on goal. Sophomore forward Valerie Barnes tied Menachof for game-high honors with three shots.
WSU's goalkeeper Brynn Bemis saved all five of the Bears' shots on goal.
