BOSTON - Washington State women's varsity eight crew finished 10th at the 42nd Annual Head of the Charles Regatta Sunday. For the second consecutive year the Cougars finished 10th with a time of 16 minutes, 38.652 seconds, just over a minute behind the first place U.S. Rowing boat.
'It's a really fun race, and a great experience,' WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said.
The Cougars crossed the finish line eighth among collegiate boats rowing in the event. Crews finishing ahead of them included defending varsity eight national champion Princeton, as well as four other teams that competed at the 2006 NCAA Championships: Washington, Yale, Stanford, and Tennessee.
'This was a good learning experience,' LaRiviere said. 'There's the potential to learn a lot and I think we will before the Head of the Lake Regatta.'
The varsity eight line-up of Kelly O'Brien (coxswain), Sarah Waterfield (stroke), Tiana Rodriquez, Becca Gibson, Kim Behrends, Carey Homan, Lina Brazinskaite, Sarah Lende and Catherine Watt started fast, posting the sixth fastest time at the first marker.
Also competing were Brown, Boston, Michigan, and UCLA, all teams ranked at the end of last season in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll.
According to regatta's website, it is the world's largest two-day rowing event, welcoming 7,000 competitors from 500 top-tier college and club teams, and over 300,000 visitors and spectators.
