Women of Troy Open Fall Crew Season at Head of the American Regatta

Oct. 24, 2006

The USC women's rowing team will begin the fall season this weekend in Sacramento, Calif., at the Head of the American on Saturday (Oct. 28). The annual regatta takes place on the banks of the American River at Lake Natoma. The one-day event is hosted by the Cal State Sacramento Aquatic Center and features a number of West Coast rowing programs.

The 2006 Women of Troy return many experienced rowers including All-American junior starboard, Tatiana Boldyreva and junior port, Ligita Kaviere. Just last season at the Head of the American Regatta, the women's rowing team defeated perennial powerhouse, Cal, in the Women's Open 8 by 38 seconds. This fall, however, the crew will not compete in the Open 8 event. They will be participating in Women's Pairs and Women's Four + Coxswain races.

USC will race eight pairs and at least five boats of four with coxwains this weekend with several rowers participating in more than one race on the day. The Head of the American course is approximately three miles in length and concludes at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

This fall, coach Zenon Babraj and Kelly Babraj are with the crew on the water six days a week and are anticipating the arrival of at least three new rowers in the spring as the Women of Troy begin preparations for the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships.
