Stanford Wrestling Begins Season at Avalon Duals
Nov. 2, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team begins 2006-07 competition on Saturday, heading to Erie, Pa. to compete in the Avalon Duals hosted by Edinboro University. Stanford will face Maryland at 1 p.m., Edinboro at 3 p.m. and Mercyhurst at 5 p.m. The event will be held at the Avalon Hotel in Erie, Pa.
In the first dual of the day, the Cardinal will meet Maryland, a team that finished fourth in the ACC last season and compiled an 8-10 dual meet record. Andrew Schlaffer, the 2006 ACC Champion at 149 pounds, is the top returner for the Terrapins, entering 2006 as the only team member to compete in the NCAA Championships last season. The Terrapins also boast some top newcomers, with the 13th-best recruiting class in the nation.
'Maryland has a lot of good young guys similar to us,' said Cardinal head coach Kerry McCoy. 'Some of their best guys are coming off of redshirt years, so they will be tough this season.'
In the second dual, the Cardinal will face host Edinboro, a team that placed eighth at the NCAA Championships last year and finished the regular-season with an undefeated record. The squad went on to clinch the Eastern Wrestling League Championship, and sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. In addition to a pair of returning All-Americans, Deonte Penn and Gregor Gillespie, the Fighting Scots boast a top-20 recruiting class.
'Edinboro is one of the most underrated teams in the country,' said McCoy. 'They have five wrestlers in the top-20 this season and are ranked 13th as a team, so they will present some very good competition.'
In the final dual, Stanford will square off with Mercyhurst College. The Lakers are a Division II program, but are listed at No. 11 in the DII Preseason Poll. Four wrestlers rank in the top eight in their weight classes, with 141-pound All-American J.J. Zanetta leading the way at No. 3. Senior Zack Schafer, the NCAA Division II runner-up at 165 in 2005-06, is the preseason No. 4 at 174 pounds.
Stanford is led by it's own returning All-American, junior Tanner Gardner, who placed eighth at 125 pounds last season and is ranked No. 5 in the preseason polls. 2006 Pac-10 placewinner Luke Feist will pace the Cardinal at 174 pounds, while senior Brian Perry returns at 165 pounds after placing at the Pac-10 Championships in 2004. Freshmen Zack Giesen and Cameron Teitelmen will see their first collegiate action this weekend, as the probable starters at 184 pounds and 133 pounds respectively.
'I'm really happy with the way the guys prepared in the preseason,' said McCoy. 'We're going to face some good competition this weekend but if we compete how we've been training, I think we will do very well.'
