Cal Announces Another Tough Schedule for 2007

BERKELEY - The 2007 California softball schedule has the Golden Bears traveling throughout the country, facing 18 opponents that made postseason appearances in the 2006 season. Of the 18 opponents, 14 finished the season ranked in top 25 national polls ( Softball and USA Today/NFCA). The 2007 schedule includes 15 home games at Levine-Fricke Field, including 11 Pac-10 Conference match-ups.

The Bears will travel for seven consecutive weeks in preseason tournaments, beginning preseason action Feb. 9 against Kansas at the Campbell/Carter Classic in San Diego. The Bears then return home for their first non-conference home game on Feb. 14 against San Jose State.

Two days later, Cal travels to the Louisville Slugger Classic hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas. Cal will play Northwestern, which lost to Arizona in a best of three championship series at the Women's College World Series.

Cal returns home to take on regional opponent Saint Mary's before heading back to the desert for the Palm Springs Classic. Included in the 23-team bracket are Texas, Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona. All four teams advanced to the 2006 Women's College World Series, with Arizona winning the national title.

Returning home, the Bears host Santa Clara on Feb. 28. Two days later, they travel to the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, where they will face Fresno State on March 2 and Nebraska on March 3.

Cal will host its last preseason home game against Loyola Chicago on March 7. The Bears will remain in the area as they travel to the NIST Tournament in San Jose.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Bears will travel to Honolulu for the Bank of Hawaii Invitational. The California Golden Bears will face the Baylor Bears for the first time since winning the Baylor Super Regional in 2005.

Cal will wrap up preseason tournament play as it travels to Louisville, Ky. The Bears face Michigan on March 23, Louisville on March 24 and Northwestern on March 25 before returning to the West Coast for Pac-10 play.

The Bears begin Pac-10 action in the state of Oregon. Cal's conference opener is March 30 versus Oregon in Eugene, and the Bears take on Oregon State in Corvallis on March 31 and April 1. Cal hosts its first Pac-10 home games when rival Stanford plays the Bears on April 6-7 in Berkeley.

On April 27 Cal, will take on the national champion Arizona Wildcats. The last time Cal hosted Arizona, the Bears came away with a 5-1 victory in 13 innings. The Bears conclude Pac-10 action at home on May 12 versus Oregon.

Cal had a 48-14 overall record last season and finished third in the conference standings, going 12-9 in the Pac-10. After going 3-0 in the Iowa Regional, the Bears went 1-2, falling to Oregon State at the Oregon State Super Regional. Before the 2006 season, Cal made seven consecutive appearances at the Women's College World Series.
