Cougars, Ducks and Beavers Get the Season Started Friday

WASHINGTON STATE, OREGON and OREGON STATE open the season participating in various tournaments. The Cougars travel to the John Thompson Foundation Classic in Milwaukee, while the Ducks and Beavers host the Basketball Travelers Classic and Oregon Rain Invitational respectively ... A day later, STANFORD opens at home against Siena, while ARIZONA and WASHINGTON begin play on Sunday ... Preseason rankings include UCLA (No. 6 AP/tied No. 5 ESPN/USA Today), Arizona (10/10) and Washington (17/16).

The UCLA Bruins are picked to finish first in the 2006-07 Pacific-10 Conference Men's basketball race, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-10 men's basketball.

The poll shows that defending Pac-10 champion Arizona gathered 21 first-place votes and is picked the favorite this season. ARIZONA picked up 13 first-place votes and is tabbed for second place. WASHINGTON is slotted for third place, followed by OREGON which picked up the remaining first-place vote. CALIFORNIA is picked for fifth, followed by USC and STANFORD. OREGON STATE edges out ARIZONA STATE for eighth, while WASHINGTON STATE rounds out the preseason poll.

  • ARIZONA opens the season Sunday, Nov. 12 at Virginia. It's the first time since the 1986-87 season (at UNLV) that the Wildcats have opened the season on the opponent's home court, and just the second time since the 1980 season ... Freshmen Chase Budinger and Nic Wise shared team-high honors with 24 points each in the Arizona's 125-74 exhibition win over Team Georgia.

  • The Herb Sendek era begins at ARIZONA STATE as the Sun Devils open the season at home against Northern Arizona on Mon., Nov. 13 in what is to be the first of six straight home games ... Sendek is 13-0 in season-openers ... The Sun Devils have won 16 straight home openers.

  • CALIFORNIA opens the season at home against Utah Valley State on Wed., Nov. 15 ... Freshman F Ryan Anderson led all Cal players with 17 points in the Bears' 83-51 exhibition win over Sonoma State.

  • The first full weekend of basketball action will see a plethora of games played in the state of Oregon as OREGON hosts the Basketball Travelers Classic with games against Lehigh, Cal State Northrdge and Portland State ... Freshman G Tajuan Porter tallied a team-high 29 points, which included a 7-of-14 performance from three-point range, in Oregon's 93-55 exhibition win over Lewis & Clark. Junior F Maarty Leunen hauled in 20 rebounds in just 29 minutes of action.

  • OREGON STATE will host the Oregon Rain Invitational and play Portland, Southeast Louisiana and Cal Poly ... The Beavers posted a 92-76 win over Saint Martin's in the team's only exhibition game of the season. Junior F Marcel Jones led the Beavers with 19 points, while senior C Kyle Jeffers posted a double-double with 10 points/15 rebounds.

  • STANFORD has had to battle through injuries, especially along the frontline, in preparation for its season opener. Cardinal players out of action include junior forward Taj Finger (back injury), junior center Peter Prowitt (recovering from a broken leg) and freshman forward Brook Lopez (recovering from preseason back surgery) ... The Cardinal host British Columbia in an exhibition contest Tuesday, then open the regular season Saturday against Siena.

  • UCLA cruised to a 73-43 exhibition win over Cal Poly Pomona. Returning All-Pac-10 junior G Arron Afflalo led the Bruins with 17 points, seven Rebounds and six assists ... ... The Bruins open the regular season on Wed., Nov. 15 at home against BYU.

  • USC gives the new Galen Center a test run with its exhibition game against Cal Poly Pomona on Sat., Nov. 11 ... The Trojans are the final Pac-10 team to get the regular season underway as they host South Carolina on Thurs., Nov. 16.

  • WASHINGTON posted a 108-74 victory over Saint Martin's in exhibition action last week. Freshmen guard Adrian Oliver and forward Quincy Pondexter were impressive in their debut. Oliver led the Huskies with 20 points in just 18 minutes of action, while Pondexter tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds.

  • Junior G Derrick Low scored a team-high 18 points in WASHINGTON STATE's 84-40 exhibition win over Central Washington. The Tony Bennett era began in typical family fashion as the Cougars held Central Washington to 25 percent shooting from the floor.
