Paul 18th, WSU Women 9th at NCAA West Regional Cross Country Meet

Nov. 11, 2006

Portland, Ore. - Washington State University junior Haley Paul finished 18th and led the WSU women's cross country team to a ninth place finish at the NCAA West Regional Meet held at Blue Lake Park Saturday.

Paul, from Phoenix, Arizona, ran the 6,000m course in a time of 21-minutes, 52.16 seconds. Junior Collier Lawrence (Reno, Nevada) was 52nd in a time of 22:44.77. The Cougar trio of Isley Gonzalez (70th), Lisa Egami (71st), and Sara Trané (72nd) rounded out the WSU scoring contingent. Chelsea VanDeBrake (83rd) also ran for the Cougars.

'Haley ran well and had a good race but just fell a little short of getting a spot for the NCAA Championships,' Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake said. 'The rest of the women had a pretty average day.'

Stanford's Arianna Lambie won the women's individual title (20:58.85) as five Cardinal women finished in the top 25 to win the team title with 42 points. UC Santa Barbara was second with 72 points while the WSU women's team finished ninth with 275 points. The Pacific-10 Conference had seven of the top ten women's teams in the 30-team competition.

Stanford's Neftalem Araia won the men's 10k race in a time of 30:05.88 as the Cardinal placed second with 88 points. Oregon had five runners in the top 25 to take the team title with 69 points while the Cougar men finished eighth.

WSU junior Alex Grant (Bellingham, Wash.) was the first Cougar man to cross the finish line at 23rd in a time of 31:02.12. Sophomore Woody Favinger was 25th followed by Andrew Jones (42nd), Drew Polley (46th) and Clay Hemlock (66th) for a team total of 201 points and eighth place among the 25 men's teams. WSU's men were the sixth Pac-10 team to finish at the Regional meet.

'The top four finishers for the men's team all had really solid races so I was happy with their finish,' said Drake. 'Beating Arizona State, who they didn't beat at the Pac-10 Chamionships, as well as placing among other good teams in the region is also exciting.'

The at-large individual invitations to the NCAA Cross Country Championships (Nov. 21, Terre Haute, Ind.) will be issued Sunday, Nov. 12.
