Nov. 12, 2006

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Marcel Jones scored 21 points and Sasa Cuic had 20 as Oregon State pulled away for a 78-65 win against Cal Poly in the Oregon Rain Invitational on Sunday.

Dawin Whiten had a game-high 22 points and six assists for Cal Poly, which scored the first eight points of the second half to close to within 40-38. Derek Stockalper had five of his 13 points during the stretch.

The Mustangs (1-2) later took the lead at 49-48 on a driving basket by Whiten with 12:05 left. Oregon State, however, answered with nine straight points and never let the lead slip to less than six.

After Cuic tipped in a teammate's miss to make it 63-55, the teams combined for 22 free throws before the next field goal - a transition dunk by Oregon State's Wesley Washington with 1:10 remaining.

Kyle Jeffers added 13 points and seven rebounds for Oregon State, which went 2-1 in the four-team, round-robin tournament.

Oregon State started strong, scoring 10 straight to go ahead 18-8 with 12:30 left in the first half. Cal Poly stormed into the lead, but the Beavers added another 10-0 run to make it 28-24. A 3-pointer by Jack McGillis gave the Beavers a 40-30 lead at halftime.

With Cuic and Jones both scoring at least 20 points, it marked the first time two Oregon State players had done that since February 26, 2005, against California.
