Cal vs. Florida State Quotes
Nov. 12, 2006
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Cal head coach Kevin Boyd
On how much the wind was a factor
'Of all of the elements, I think wind is the most difficult to deal with. Everyone is going to say that. When you're going into the wind, the ball won't go anywhere. You have to keep it down to try to move it. When you have the wind with you, you can play balls behind the other team. It stretches them out because they have to drop off and worry about getting played over. The wind is always a factor. How big it was this game? I didn't think it was a gale by any means. It was more of a factor on a serving situation than the flow of the game.'
Cal senior forward Katie Ratican
On the corner kick goal early in the second half
'We've always been pretty dangerous on corner kicks. Primarily myself and a few other players have been taking them this year, and we know exactly where we need to hit the ball. The wind was wicked today. The wind took (the ball), and it went right in on its own. That's where I was going with it anyway. Our players were supposed to be there. If it didn't go in on its own, someone would have been there for it.'
On the growth Cal's program has shown over the last four years
'My freshman year we didn't even make it to the playoffs. It was a frustrating year, and we always thought it was our fault a little bit. We were the new kids coming in. The year after that, we had a tough game against Santa Clara (in the NCAA Tournament), and we kept going up. Last year, it was really nice going to the Sweet 16. I feel like Cal is going to keep getting better.'
Cal senior defender Alivia Mazura
On Cal's better play in the second half
'It was flat out effort. We came out a lot more confident in the second half. The whole first half is not the way you want to play a big game. Unfortunately, we can't go back and take that back. It's great that we came back and really dominated the second half and gave them a really good game, a run for their money.'
On Cal's growth since the current seniors arrival
'The players coming in have huge expectations, and they know how good of a program we are. Every year I've been here the level has gone up and up. I feel like it's going to keep going up.'
