Nov. 12, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists to lead No. 21 California past Saint Mary's 71-56 Sunday.

Ashley Walker scored 15 points for the Bears (1-0) while Lauren Greif and Krista Foster each had 11. Monica Mertle led Saint Mary's with 14 points and Maija Lahde had 13.

The Bears, who entered the game with a preseason ranking for the first time, took 37 free throws to just 13 for Saint Mary's and converted 29 Gael turnovers into 27 points.

The Gaels (0-1) were playing their first game for coach Paul Thomas, who was hired over the summer. Saint Mary's led through much of the early part of the game, with Cal hitting just four of its first 16.

Cal saw limited play from preseason all-American Devenai Hampton, who logged just eight minutes due to knee problems. She finished with three points and three rebounds.
