Nov. 15, 2006
Somers, Wis. - Stanford freshman swimmer Julia Smit has been named a National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com. Smit was one of six swimmers across the country - two in each NCAA Division - selected based on their performances November 6-12, 2006.
Smit recorded two NCAA automatic qualifying marks in the 400 IM (4:10.09) and 200 back (1:56.00) on the first day of a two-day tri-meet last Friday and Saturday to help lead No. 3 ranked and unbeaten Stanford (5-0) to victories over No. 4 Auburn and No. 15 Tennessee. The times she recorded in the events, which had just one event sandwiched between, made her Stanford's fourth and fifth-best all-time performer in the respective events. Smit added four other NCAA consideration marks in the meet with a winning time of 2:01.17 in the 200 IM, as well as a 100 back split of 54.90 to lead off a 400 medley relay team that recorded a 3:41.72 NCAA consideration time. She also reached the standard by anchoring a winning 200 medley relay squad that finished with a time of 1:42.27.
'Julia was definitely the talk of the pool deck,' Maurer commented after the completion of the first day of action. 'People know she is making a mark on Stanford and starting to do so on a national level as well. She is a composed and focused swimmer, and wants to be a part of rebuilding Stanford's tradition and getting back to where we want to be on the national scene.'
The National Collegiate Swimmers of the Week are selected by a panel of collegiate coaches and nominated by coaches, sports information directors, conference representatives and CollegeSwimming.com staffers.
Stanford's divers will next compete at the Indiana Open Invitational next Friday-Sunday, November 17-19, before both the swimmers and divers will conclude the fall portion of their seasons at the Texas Invitational (Thursday-Saturday, November 30 - December 2).
