Cougar Volleyball Falls to Arizona State in Five Games
Nov. 16, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State volleyball team battled Arizona State for two-hours and 33 minutes Thursday night but could not overtake the visiting Sun Devils, and the Cougars ended the match with a 15-13 loss in the fifth game.
Arizona State (14-13, 6-10) defeated WSU (15-13, 3-12) with game scores of 27-30, 30-26, 32-30, 23-30, 15-13.
ASU was led by the 23 kills of Margie Giordano while Nin Reeves added another 19 kills. Libero Sydney Donahue, the Pac-10's digs leader had 41 digs as Reeves and Giordano combined for another 45 digs.
WSU's Kelly Rosin and Brittany Johnson combined for 37 of the Cougars' 83 kills while freshman Kelly Hyder reached a career-high of 34 digs, missing the school record of 35 digs held by teammate Jalen Pendon. Cassie Robbins had a match-high five blocks and setter Corina Beyer and a career-high 72 assists and three solo blocks.
'Tonight we out-stated Arizona State in every category, not by much, but we were right there,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'Our team performed very well on our side of the net much of the night. We had a few lapses, and we ended game five with a couple of hitting errors and a service error. I was proud of our effort, we are encouraging our team to refocus, come back tomorrow and try to get better. This was a much better effort than versus the University of Washington (Nov. 10).'
Washington State hosts Arizona Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in Bohler Gym for the final home match of the 2006 season and will salute the Cougar seniors.
