SEATTLE-- Junior All-American Christal Morrison piloted the second-ranked Washington volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Arizona Thursday night, fueled by a career-best 28 kills. The win marks UW's 27th consecutive victory and lifts the Huskies to 23-3 overall and 13-2 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats drop to 12-16 overall and 3-13 in conference play. Game scores were 30-19, 30-25, 29-31, 30-19.
Washington out-played Arizona in every statistical category, even out-blocking the Pac-10 leaders 13-11. The Huskies also held advantages in kills (72-60), hitting percentage (.263-.176), aces (7-3) and digs (79-75).
Senior All-American Courtney Thompson paced the UW offense, dishing 60 assists on the night to pull within 43 assists of breaking the Pac-10 career record. Thompson currently has 6,192 career assists, which ranks 12th on the NCAA all-time list.
Freshman libero Tamari Miyashiro anchored the Huskies defense with 30 digs, moving her into third place on the UW all-time single-season list. Miyashiro, who has three 30-plus digs performances, now has 472 digs on the season and is within striking distance of former All-American libero and current U.S.A. National Team member Candace Lee for the No. 2 spot (530, 2005).
Morrison added 17 digs on defense with pick up her 15th double-double of the season, while Mussie added 11 digs and Thompson had 10.
Swarbrick led Washington's blocking game with six stuff, while Alesha Deesing, Morrison and Mussie each had four blocks.
The Huskies return to action Friday night it they host Arizona State in what will be the final regular season home match for seniors Courtney Thompson and Janine Sandell. Washington will honor the seniors in a ceremony before the 7 p.m. first serve.
