Stanford Holds Off Northwestern, 58-53

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Lawrence Hill scored a career-high 21 points, including a key basket in the final 30 seconds, and Stanford held off a late rally by Northwestern, beating the Wildcats 58-53 on Friday.

Taj Finger added 12 points as the Cardinal (3-1) won their 47th in 53 home games.

Tim Doyle scored 13 points for the Wildcats (1-2) which fell to 12-32 against Pac-10 teams. Vince Scott added 11 points.

Stanford held the lead most of the contest but wasn't able to shake the Wildcats. The Cardinal grabbed a 52-40 lead on consecutive jumpers from Mitch Johnson in the final six minutes but Northwestern responded with 11 unanswered points - highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers and a left hook by the 6-10 senior center Scott - to pull with one with 2:47 left to play.

Doyle hit a pair of free throws 47 seconds later to tie it at 53.

Cardinal freshman seven-footer Robin Lopez missed his only attempt in the first half and grabbed just two rebounds. He was a different player in the second half, making his presence felt with a pair of blocked shots.

Hill came up with a critical rebound of a missed Stanford free throw which led to an inside basket to put the Cardinal 57-53 heading into the final seconds. Hill finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
