Nov. 20, 2006
SUN DEVIL DATA: The young Arizona State University men's basketball team takes on the San Jose State Spartans (0-3) on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Arizona. The Sun Devils are led by freshmen Jerren Shipp (15.0 ppg.) and Christian Polk (17.3 ppg.) as both topped 20 points in the first game of the season. ASU will host defending Big Ten Tournament champion Iowa (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Saturday (Nov. 25) at 7:30 p.m. FSN Arizona will then broadcast the Nov. 28 contest vs. Northern Colorado (6:30 p.m.), while the Minnesota road game on Sat., Dec. 2, will tip at noon central time/11 a.m. Arizona time and also be on FSN Arizona. Trey Bender and Tom Kuyper will call the action for Fox Sports Net Arizona, while Tim Healey and former ASU assistant coach Russ Pennell have the call for ESPN 860 AM.
HOW YOUNG, YOU ASK: ASU has seven players averaging double-digit minutes, and four of them are in their first year of competition. Christian Polk (27.7 mpg.), Jerren Shipp (33.0), Steve Jones, who did not play last year but was on the team (13.0) and Derek Glasser (15.3) all are in their first year of college hoops this year. Of the remaining three players, two of them (Jeff Pendergraph and Antwi Atuahene) are in just their second year of D-I hoops.
TAKINGS THREES: Herb Sendek's NC State squad last year averaged nine three-pointers made per game, the best mark in the ACC and the ninth-best in the nation. ASU has made 25 threes in its first three games, topping its season-high of nine set three times last year by making 10 in each of the first two games. ASU last made 10 three-pointers in a 95-90 overtime loss to 14th-ranked Washington in the Pac-10 Tournament on March 10, 2005.
SERIES RECORDS: ASU is 7-6 vs. San Jose State, but has played the Spartans just once in the past 19 seasons, a 68-49 Sun Devil win in Tempe in the season opener on Nov. 13, 1998. Coach Herb Sendek is 1-0 against the Spartans, winning 78-56 in Raleigh in the second game of the year on Nov. 15, 2001, en route to a 23-11 overall record and a tie for third in the ACC with a 9-7 mark.
TOO EARLY TO LOOK AT THIS, BUT WE WILL DO IT ANYWAYS: Jerren Shipp is averaging 33.0 minutes per game, as Byron Scott set the ASU freshmen record at 32.3 minutes per game in 1979-80. Other notable freshmen minutes per game include Ike Diogu (32.2 in 2002-03), Eddie House (29.5 in 1996-97) and Jamal Faulkner (29.1 in 1990-91). Faulkner, Sbott and Diogu were all named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year while House made the league's All-Freshman Team.
NOTES FROM FIRST THREE GAMES: Jeff Pendergraph's 10 offensive boards vs. Portland State is the most by any Sun Devil in more than a decade. His 15 field goal attempts is the second-highest in his 30-game career (18 vs. Oregon on Feb. 11, 2006). He set his career high with 13 boards vs. Portland State and tied his career high with 21 points. His work in conditioning has paid off, as he has gained 35 pounds since his freshman year (195 to 230) and added 95 pounds to his bench press (185 to 280) yet has not lost any inches on his vertical jump. He also ran the mile in 5:47 in his fall conditioning test...Antwi Atuahene is averaging nine points and 5.7 assists per game. He has 17 assists and just six turnovers through three games...ASU's 36 three-point attempts vs. NAU is the most since it shot 36 against NAU on Dec. 21, 1992, and is tied for the third-most in school history. The school record is 51, set on Dec. 1, 1992, at Brigham Young...ASU's seven free throw attempts vs. NAU was its fewest since it had six at second-ranked Stanford on Feb. 5, 2004...ASU's four freshmen are averaging 80 out of a possible 200 minutes per game, with Shipp averaging 33.0, Polk 27.7, reserves Derek Glasser 15.3 and George Odufuwa four...the Nov. 13 start date matched the second-earliest starting date in school history, topped only by the Nov. 10, 2000, 69-67 Tulsa loss in the NABC Classic at Raleigh. It also was Coach Herb Sendek's second-earliest starting date in his 14 years of coaching...ASU now has six players on its roster who have scored 20 points in a game, all of them happening in the past year. In addition to Shipp, Polk, Seay and Pendergraph, both Serge Angounou and Antwi Atuahene have notched 20-point games in their careers.
IMPRESSIVE FIRST OUTING FOR FRESHMEN DUO: Starting freshmen Jerren Shipp (23 points) and Christian Polk (22 points) posted the two highest scoring openers by ASU freshmen, topping the mark of 18 points set by Jamal Faukner on Nov. 23, 1990, against Kansas, in the 75-71 loss to NAU on Nov. 13. It also marked just the second time in 15 seasons two Sun Devil freshmen started an opener. Eleven freshmen have now started season openers in the past 20 seasons (1987-88 to 2006-07) and just four times in that span a pair of freshmen have earned opening night starts. The NAU game also marked just the second time in ASU history two freshmen have scored 20 points in the same game, as the only other time was last year on Feb. 11 when Jeff Pendergraph and Sylvester Seay each had 21 against Oregon.
