Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season Friday With Arizona

The final match of the regular season is also the most important one for the Sun Devils, as they must beat their in-state rival to finish the regular season with a winning record, thus qualifying them for postseason play...ASU split their matches last weekend, outlasting Washington State 3-2 on Thursday night before falling 3-0 to #2 Washington on Friday night...ASU faced 13 ranked opponents during the regular season, including nine against Top 10 teams...Arizona State has faced eleven teams that have been ranked at one time or another.


Devils vs. Wildcats:

There is no love lost between these two bitter rivals. The Sun Devils and the Wildcats have met 70 times on a volleyball court, with the Wildcats holding a 36-34 all-time edge.  ASU snapped a five match UA winning streak when they won the first meeting this season in Tucson, the Devils first win at McKaleCenter since 1999.


No More Game Five  Blues:

With their five-game win over WSU on Nov. 16, the Sun Devils picked up their first win in five games on the year. They had lost their previous five, dating back to last season.


Career Highs:

Margie Giordano has set new career highs with her 23 kills against Washington State on Nov. 16, and her 23 digs against Butler...Sydney Donahue's 50 digs against LMU are a career high and NCAA record for digs in a three-game match...Danielle Fernandes set a career high in kills, three times recording ten against UVSC, LMU and Duke...Tierra Burnley set a career high with 14 kills against California on Oct. 28.

•    Sydney Donahue has recorded 10 or more digs in 72 of her 82 career matches.

•    Sydney Donahue has recorded double-digit digs in 39 straight matches.

Last Week's Rewind:

ASU was finally able to exorcise their five game demons in Pullman on Thursday night, beating WashingtonState 3-2. Margie Giordano had 23 kills and Nina Reeves added 19 in the victory. Sydney Donahue led the defense with her 41 digs...The second ranked Washington Huskies were too much for the drained Devils on Friday night, as the defending NCAA Champs swept ASU.


Syd's New Record(s):

Junior libero Sydney Donahue became the all-time leading digger in ArizonaStateUniversity volleyball history on Nov. 10 during the 3-1 win over Oregon. In that match, Donahue recorded her 1,598th career dig, moving her past Christy Nore for the top spot. Donahue now has 1,613 digs over her almost three seasons in Tempe. She also broke her own record for digs in a season, surpassing the 628 she recorded last year. Donahue currently leads the Pac-10 in total digs (671) and digs per game (6.68).

Morton Magnificent:

Senior outside hitter Nicole Morton is having an outstanding senior season. She is the team leader in kills (327) and kills per game (3.27) while hitting at a .236 clip. She led the team last season with 300 kills and was named honorable mention All-Pac-10.


No Sophomore Slump:

Sophomore outside hitter Margie Giordano has picked up right where she left off last season when she was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. Giordano has played rock solid so far this year, totaling 305 kills for an average of 2.99 per game. She also leads the team with her 27 service aces as well as 12 double-doubles.


Reeves To The Rescue:

Senior Nina Reeves has very quietly been a killing machine this season. She is second on the team with 322 kills, an average of 3.19 per game. She's turned in six double-doubles this season, including an 19 kill, 24 dig performance against WashingtonState on Nov. 18.


Knowledge Is Its Own Reward:

Junior middle blocker Colette Meek has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Second Team. A season ago she was an Academic All-Pac-10 Second Team selection.


Head Coach Brad Saindon:

Head Coach Brad Saindon is in his fourth season at the helm of the Sun Devil Volleyball program. Saindon has compiled a 41-69 record at ASU and an all-time 285-209 record in 16 seasons at the collegiate level. He coached the University of Colorado to a 181-112 record from 1986-96, leading the Buffaloes to six NCAA Tournaments and two Sweet 16 appearances. He was also the head coach of the Australian Women's National Team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
