Nov. 24, 2006
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 14 California swept the Washington State volleyball team 30-23, 30-17, 30-22, in a Pacific-10 Conference match Friday night at Haas Pavilion on the Berkeley campus.
The Golden Bears, now 20-8 overall, 9-8 in conference play, were led by the combined 36 kills from Ellen Orchard, Angie Pressey and Morgan Beck. Beck had a match-high five blocks and Orchard hit .435 in the three-game win. Setter Samantha Carter had 42 assists and libero Jillian Davis added 13 digs. Carter and Beck each had a pair of aces.
WSU, now 15-16 on the season, 3-14 in Pac-10 action, were led by the nine kills from Adetokunbo Faleti, who hit .308 for the match. Corina Beyer had 17 assists and Kelly Hyder had 18 digs. Tara West and Brittany Johnson each had three blocks. Freshman Jackie Albright added seven kills and 13 digs.
The Cougars were without the services of senior outside hitter Kelly Rosin who suffered a partial fracture in her foot in her final home match last weekend, and sophomore defensive specialist Jalen Pendon who was diagnosed with mononucleosis last week.
'We played very well at times tonight, especially early in the games, but made too many errors,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'There were too many unforced errors on our side - ball-handling errors and attack errors - and we played very, very young at times.'
Washington State completes its 2006 volleyball season at No. 3 Stanford Saturday night at Maples Pavilion.
