Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team heads to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the 25th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. Action begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1 and concludes with the Championship Finals at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2. All matches will be held at the Star of the Desert Arena in Primm, Nev.
Junior Tanner Gardner, who took fourth at the event last season, currently leads the Cardinal with an 8-0 record and a No. 5 national ranking at 125 pounds.
'Tanner will get a good test this weekend,' said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. 'Ten of the top-15 125 pound wrestlers will be there, as well as two guys that are ranked ahead of him. It will be a good chance for him to continue to improve.'
The 49-team field includes 12 top-25 teams, including No. 2 Missouri, No. 5 Hofstra and No. 8 Michigan. The Cardinal will also get a look at some conference competition, as eight of the ten Pac-10 squads will be represented.
'Las Vegas is definitely one of the top tournaments in the country,' said McCoy. 'There are a lot of tough teams and a lot of tough individuals. Our guys and our coaching staff are really excited. Last season, we had two guys make it to the second day. We hope to improve on that result this year and get a lot of guys to place.'
More information about the two-day tournament is available at the Official Tournament Website.
