Huskies Preview Gymnastics Season At Intrasquad Meet

Nov. 29, 2006

SEATTLE - Husky gymnastics fans can catch a sneak peek at the 2007 GymDawgs this Sunday, Dec. 3, when Washington hosts its annual Purple-Gold Intrasquad Meet at Bank of America Arena. Doors open at 1 p.m., with the competition scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all spectators, and includes an autograph session and silent auction in the Founders' Club following the meet.

'Our team has been working extremely hard to improve their skills and this meet will be a great time to showcase them to the public,' says first-year head coach Joanne Bowers.

Washington returns 10 of 11 letterwinners from its 2006 squad, including third-place regional vault finisher Ashley Houghting and senior All-Arounder Chelsea Bakken. Sunday's meet will also feature the official UW debut of newcomers Cassidy Lance (Draper, Utah), Bonita Lee (Piedmont, Calif.) and Celia Short (Sammamish, Wash.), as well as a first-year coaching staff including Bowers and assistants Shanna Duggan and David MacCreary.

Long respected as one of the nation's top assistant coaches during outstanding tenures at Michigan (2002-06) and Kent State (1998-01), Bowers is excited to showcase her team for Husky fans and alumni on Sunday.

'My assistants, David McCreary and Shanna Duggan, and I are eager to see how our team will compete,' says Bowers. 'This will be a good measuring stick for where we are and still give us some time to change anything we need to before our season opener in January.

At the conclusion of the meet, all fans in attendance are invited to join the Huskies' gymnasts and coaches in the Arena's Founders' Club for a free autograph session and silent auction. Dubbed the '5th Event,' this exciting new tradition will be a staple of all UW home meets in 2007 and beyond, featuring snacks, drinks and fun interaction between Washington's fans, coaches and student-athletes.

'We are hoping our fans will embrace this opportunity to spend time with the team after our meets,' Bowers says.
