Dec. 2, 2006

ATHENS, Ga. - California sophomores Jessica Hardy and Dana Vollmer swam automatic NCAA qualifying times to help the fourth-ranked Golden Bears win four of six preliminary events at the Georgia Fall Invitational on Saturday, the second day of the meet, at Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia. Hardy bettered her own and Cal's season-best time in the 100-yard breaststroke to win with a 1:00.05 today and Vollmer swam a 53.20 to beat second-place Hardy by more than a second in the 100-yard butterfly for the Bears, who lead the six-team field with 315 points. Vollmer's 53.20 puts her fifth on Cal's all-time top 10 list in the 100 fly.

Also in the 100 breaststroke, Cal senior Annie Babicz took fourth place in a time of 1:03.32 (NCAA B) and freshman teammate Alexandra Ellis was fifth in a person-best time of 1:03.82.

Hardy had a season-best time of 54.91 in the 100 fly, in which Cal had three of the top four finishers. Bears junior Rachel Ridgeway tied Missouri's Colleen Gordon for fourth in a season-best time of 55.94.

The Bears had three swimmers place in the top eight in the 200 freestyle as senior Erin Reilly won in a season-best time of 1:47.48 (NCAA B), junior teammate Emily Silver was third in a season-best 1:48.44 (NCAA B) and freshman teammate Blake Hayter was eighth in a personal-best 1:49.92 (NCAA B).

Cal had two Bears swim season-best times in the top eight of the 100 backstroke, as sophomore Lauren Rogers won the race in 54.98 (NCAA B) and senior Lauren Andrews placed sixth in 56.39. Rogers' 54.98 is Cal's fastest time of the season in the 100 back and puts her ninth on Cal's all-time top 10 list in that event.

Two freshmen had Cal's best swims in the 400 individual medley, as Heather White was third in 4:21.91 (NCAA B) and Courtney Eronemo was seventh in a career-best 4:26.23. Minnesota's Jenny Shaughnessy won the 400 IM in 4:16.00 (NCAA B).
