Dec. 4, 2006
The men's golf team has signed Jesper Kennegard (Stockholm, Sweden) and Jed Dirksen (Hampton, Iowa) to add to three prior announcements to finish its strong fall of 2006 signing class.
'In my 26 years of coaching this is certainly our best recruiting class ever,' says ASU head coach Randy Lein, in his 15h year at ASU and seven-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year. 'These five guys could make up a formidable five-man lineup on their own. Coach (Mickey) Yokoi and I are extremely pleased with this year's signees.'
Kennegard and Dirksen join previously announced signees James Byrne (Aberdeenshire, Scotland), Scott Pinckney (Anthem, Ariz.) and Cameron Edens (Phoenix, Ariz.).
On the latest junior golf scoreboard, Kennegard (No. 16), Dirksen (22), Edens (32) and Pinckney (46) all register top-50 rankings among the 2007 graduating class.
Dirksen is from Iowa but is competing in Florida this year. He most recently finished third at the Polo Invitational (Nov. 20-24) and also finished third at the AJGA Phoenix Junior Championship held in mid-August. He took home the title at the Pepsi Little Peoples Championship with 136 (67-69) June 19-21, the Sheffield Men's Invitational (June 17) and the Coldwater Golf Links (May 27). He was named to the All Miami-Dade first team in the fall of 2005 and is a top-30 player according to Golfweek/USA Today.
Dirksen attended Westminster Christian School in Miami last year for fall semester of his junior year and helped the team make its first appearance at the state tournament with a ninth-place individual showing. He is a 17-time medalist in high school in both Florida and Iowa.
'I see a lot of upside with Jed. He is one of those young players who just has a passion for the game. He has had a lot of success already adn as his game continues to develop he will earn All-America honors. We have a great group of young players coming in next fall and Jed will be a big part of their success.'
Kennegard is the 2006 recipient of the Sorenstram Award for Sweden Junior Player of the Year and a member of Sweden's World Junior Team, the European Boys Championship and a member of the Jacques Leglise Trophy team. In 2005 he earned MVP honors and won all four of his matches. He also finished third at the 2005 European Boys Championship.
'Jesper brings with him an abundance of international competition experience. He has had much success both as an individual and in representing Sweden in team competitions. He will be a tremendous asset to our Sun Devil team.'
