Two Former Bruins Earn PGA TOUR Cards

Dec. 4, 2006

Former UCLA golf standouts John Merrick and Parker McLachlin earned the PGA TOUR cards Sunday by enduring the 106-hole marathon known as PGA Qualifying School.

Merrick (UCLA '04) fired rounds of 74-69-68-67-67-74--417 (-15) and tied for fourth place. McLachlin (UCLA '02) tied for 16th and posted rounds of 73-70-66-73-68-71--421 (-11). They became the first UCLA players to earn their TOUR cards through Q-School since Scott McCarron in 1994.

Prior to the tournament, Merrick, 24, had earned exempt status by finishing among the top money winners on the 2006 Nationwide Tour, where he earned over $208,000, including one victory. That exemption put him in Category 24. By making the Q-School cut, he improved his standing to a Category 3.

McLachlin, 27, also played on the Nationwide Tour this year and won $176,882, 29th on the money list. Last year, he attempted to qualify through Q-School but missed the cut and earned exempt status on the Nationwide Tour.
