Cougars Cruise To 72-61 Victory Over San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Washington State's Katie Appleton recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the Cougars' 72-61 win over the San Jose State Spartans, Tuesday at McPherson Court.
Washington State improved to 3-5 while San Jose State dropped to 0-9.
Appleton, a sophomore from Big Bear Lake, Calif., scored 10 of her season-high point total in the first half. Additionally, her 11 rebounds were a career high.
Sophomore Ebonee Coates (Tacoma, Wash.) just missed her first career double-double with nine points and eight rebounds. Freshman Marisa Stotler (Chandler, Ariz.) also scored nine points, all in the second half. The Spartans were led by 12 points from Alisha Hicks.
San Jose State jumped out to a 5-2 lead but the Cougars went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-7 advantage nearly eight minutes into the game. WSU extended it lead to double figures at 20-9 before SJSU went on an 8-0 run to slice its deficit to 20-17 with 6:27 remaining in the first half; however, WSU withstood the Spartans' rally and ended the opening 20 minutes with a 33-24 lead.
SJSU cut the Cougars' lead to seven at 35-28 during the opening moments of the second half but WSU went on another 10-2 run to extend its lead to double figures at 45-30 with 15:29 remaining in the game. The closest the Spartans would get the rest of the way would be eight points.
The Cougars return to action against Montana, Friday, Dec. 8 for a 7 p.m. game at Bohler Gym.
