Davis, Goethel Named Honorable Mention Freshman All-America by Sporting News

ArizonaStateUniversity defensive end Dexter Davis and linebacker Travis Goethel have been selected as 2006 Sporting News Honorable Mention Freshman All-Americans, The Sporting News announced Tuesday.


Davis, a redshirt freshman and Phoenix, Ariz. native, started all 12 regular season games and was ASU's leader in sacks (5.0) and tackles-for-loss (8.5) on the year. He also led all Sun Devil defensive linemen with 37 tackles (24 solo) and forced a team-high three fumbles.  Davis was named to TSN's Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and was presented with the 2006 Bill Kajikawa Sun Devil Award, presented annually to ASU's top freshman.


Goethel, a freshman from Vista, Calif., played in all 12 games, starting four.  On the year, he recorded 27 tackles (19 solo) and one sack. Goethel joined Davis as a member of TSN's Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.


Davis, Goethel and the Sun Devils will close out the 2006 season against Hawai'i in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl, held Dec. 24 in Honolulu.
