LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's basketball team got nine different scorers in on the action against Hawaii as the Trojans pulled ahead and stayed there on the way to a 72-52 victory over the visiting Rainbow Wahine on Saturday afternoon at the Lyon Center. Playing at the Lyon Center for the first time in the season, the Women of Troy shot 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded Hawaii 24-13 in the first half. While the Rainbow Wahine were hot early from 3-point range, USC utilized a balanced attack with eight different Trojans scoring and grabbing rebounds in the half to help pull the Women of Troy ahead 38-30 by halftime. USC remained strong on the boards while clamping down tighter on the Rainbow Wahine defensively to lead by as much as 23 after a 3-pointer by Shay Murphy made it 65-42 USC with under six minutes remaining. With Nicole Berberet's first career score in the final minute, USC tallied its ninth scorer in the game.
The Women of Troy jumped out to a strong start, working ahead to a seven-point lead thanks to threes from Jamie Hagiya and Allison Jaskowiak for an early 14-7 edge. But Hawai'i went 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the first 10 minutes of play to close the gap, taking a short-lived lead that disappeared when Murphy nailed a three of her own to get USC back ahead 19-17 and spark a scoring spurt for the Trojans. USC forced a pair of turnovers and converted on the other end, ballooning the lead back to seven on a low score from Chloe Kerr that made it 27-20 at the 10-minute mark of the first half, Jaskowiak put Hawai'i behind by nine with a long two-pointer to roll USC out on an 8-0 run that was stopped with a score from Brittany Grice. Janevia Taylor hit Hawaii's fifth three soon after to pull the score to 29-25 USC with eight minutes remaining. Kerr stuffed a Rainbow Wahine shot attempt and then nailed a jumper on the other end for a 31-25 USC lead at 6:30. Kristen Travers drilled a three from the corner for the Trojans to get USC up 36-27 and include herself as the eighth Trojan to score in the game. Dalia Sloia drained a three just before the shot clock expired on Hawaii's last possession of the half, and Jaskowiak closed things down with a pair of free throws to hold USC ahead 38-30 entering the locker rooms.
Murphy opened the second half with a 3-pointer and a jumper to boost USC to its largest lead of the game at 43-30 before Hawaii got a bucket from Saundra Cariaga. Nadia Parker grabbed a rebound and slipped in the putback and then Hagiya nabbed a steal and a layup for a 50-35 USC advantage with 14 minutes to go. The Trojans put the Rainbow Wahine up against the shot clock with 12 minutes to go, forcing a violation as USC took over the ball. Murphy and Morghan Medlock wrapped scores around a Hawaii basket, and then Kerr answered a Hawaii 3-pointer with a jumper to keep USC ahead 56-40 entering the final 10 minutes of play. Kerr joined Jaskowiak and Murphy in double figures with a take that made it 58-40, and then Hagiya dished out an assist to Hailey Dunham for a 20-point Trojan lead at the 7-minute mark. Another Hagiya-Dunham connection put USC up 62-40 before Hawaii would score again. Iwona Zagrobelna became the first Rainbow Wahine player to hit double figures when she hit a pair of free throws just before Hawaii hit its ninth three of the match. Parker scored from down low to get the score to 67-49 USC with three minutes remaining to help keep the Trojans in complete control the rest of the way en route to the 72-52 win.
