Shay Murphy Named Naismith Trophy Preseason Candidate
Dec. 12, 2006
USC senior guard Shay Murphy has been tabbed a preseason candidate for basketball's most prestigious national honor, the Naismith Trophy. Only two Women of Troy have won the award - Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie - and considering Murphy recently joined that pair on USC's 1,000 career point list as well as the single-game 30-point scoring list, Murphy has certainly proven herself a worthy candidate for the national award.
There are 50 national candidates on the initial list, but that number will get cut down to 30 in January by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors. In March, the final ballot will be determined.
Murphy was selected as a Naismith Preseason Candidate after emerging as USC's top scorer in 2005-06 and earning Kodak/WBCA All-America honorable mention. She provided team-high scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounding (7.3 rpg), steals (2.4 spg) and 3-pointers made (69) that year to help USC to an NCAA Second Round appearance. She also finished out the year ranked among the top-10 in the Pac-10 in seven categories: second in steals (2.42 spg), fourth in 3-pointers made, fifth in scoring, sixth in free-throw percentage (.785), sixth in rebounding, sixth in offensive rebounds (2.48 pg) and seventh in defensive rebounds (4.77 pg).
This season, Murphy has extended her double-digit scoring streak to 33 straight games, and has posted four double-double in USC's first eight games of the year. She is averaging 19.9 points 9.3 rebounds per game and leads the team with 21 steals. She currently ranks as USC's No. 16 career scorer with 1,115 points and is two steals away from ranking No. 10 in career steals (now holds 193). She already sits as USC's all-time 3-point leader with 134 career threes.
Murphy's 2006-07 preseason honors now include: Naismith Trophy Preseason Candidate, State Farm Wade Trophy Preseason Candidate, John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team, Street & Smith Preseason Honorable Mention, Preseason All-Pac-10 Team.
