Nana Meriwether Named Honda Award Nominee

Dec. 20, 2006

UCLA senior middle blocker Nana Meriwether has been selected as one of four finalists for the 2006-07 Honda Award for Women's Volleyball. This honor caps a record-setting senior season as Meriwether led the Bruins to a 33-4 record and the team's first NCAA Semifinals appearance since 1994.

The Most Valuable Player of UCLA's NCAA Regional, Meriwether led the Pac-10 and NCAA Division I with a .448 season attack percentage and a 1.95 blocks per-game average, becoming the first player in NCAA Division I history to lead the final national statistical standings in two different categories for the same season.

A first-team All-American and All-Pac-10 selection this season, Meriwether completed her UCLA career with school records for single-season and career attack percentage, the single-season block assists record and is second on UCLA's all-time list for career block assists and total blocks despite playing just three seasons for the Bruins.

Meriwether, a native of Potomac, Md., earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors three times this season, including earning AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week notice on Sept. 5. For that national honor, Meriwether recorded the fourth-highest attack percentage in NCAA Division I history with at least 20 attacks (20K-1E-24TA). She also earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at all four of UCLA's tournaments, including MVP honors at the State Farm Bearcat Invitational, Hawaiian Airlines Classic and Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational.

Meriwether joins Nebraska's Sarah Pavan, Stanford's Foluke Akinradewo and Washington's Courtney Thompson as the 2006-07 Volleyball Honda Sports Award nominees. The winner after nationwide balloting will become a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The winner's program will receive $5,000.

UCLA women's volleyball has had three Honda Award winners. Liz Masakayan won the award for the 1984-85 year, while Natalie Williams was the award's recipient in both 1991-92 and 1992-93. Meriwether is UCLA's first Honda Award nominee since Annett Buckner in 1994-95.
