Golden Bears Meet Dolphins and Whales in San Diego

Dec. 24, 2006

SAN DIEGO - Day two of the California football team's visit to San Diego for the 29th annual Pacific Life Holiday Bowl brought the highlights of the event to date. Players were selected to get up close and personal with the dolphins, while Shamu lived up to his reputation with an impressive display of spashing, as the team visited Sea World. The day was not all fun and games however, as the Bears also completed a focused and intense two-hour-plus practice on the campus of San Diego State University.

The day opened with breakfast and team meetings, including special teams and individual position meetings. At noon, the Golden Bears kicked off a normal 'Tuesday' practice which focuses on a 'Saturday' game day, as the Bears battle Texas A&M in the Holiday Bowl on Thursday evening at 5 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on ESPN with Chris Fowler handling play-by-play duties, Kirk Herbstreit providing color commentary and Erin Andrews reporting from the sidelines.

Following the practice, the Bears visited Sea World, with quarterback Nate Longshore, linebacker Mickey Pimentel, defensive end Rulon Davis and offensive lineman Mike Gibson being selected to feed the dolphins. The team also had the opportunity to watch sea otters, sea lions, penguins, sharks and the killer whale show with Shamu, a 1,600-pound killer whale, as well as two more of the massive and majestic animals.

Christmas Day on Monday includes more work as the team will hold another practice, but a visit to the world-famous San Diego Zoo and a team-Christmas Dinner will highlight the holiday.

California, which set a school record for average home attendance this year, will be playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game for the first time in school history on Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium. The Golden Bears have posted a 9-3 record thus far this season. It is just the 15th time that the Bears have won nine or more games in program history.

A limited number of tickets are still available through the Cal Ticket Office, which will open in the lobby of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego on Tuesday, Dec. 26th at 1 p.m.
