Ryan Torain Named JUCO Transfer All-America by JCGridiron.com

Dec. 26, 2006

Arizona StateUniversity's junior tailback Ryan Torain has been named to the 2006 JCGridiron JUCO Transfer All-America Team, JCGridiron.com announced Tuesday.

In his first year at ASU, Torain led the Sun Devils with 1,229 rushing yards and ten total touchdowns (seven rushing, three receiving). The Second-Team All-Pac-10 honoree played became the first ASU ballcarrier to surpass the 1,000-yard mark since Delvon Flowers in 2001, and his overall total is the greatest amount since Freddie Williams' 1427-yard 1975 campaign and the eighth-best single-season effort in school history.

Overall, the Shawnee Mission, Kan., native became the first at ASU to surpass 1,200 rushing yards in over 30 years and recorded the greatest rushing total by a Sun Devil in his debut season since ASU's all-time leading rusher Woody Green began his career rushing for 1,310 yards in 1971.

The former Butler (Kan.) Community College star averaged 94.5 rushing yards-per-game and led ASU with four 100-yard rushing games, including a season-high 191 rushing yards against California. Torain also earned Most Valuable Player honors in ASU's victory over rival Arizona, rushing for 139 yards while tying his season-best of 24 carries. He capped off the 2006 season rushing for a season-high 8.9 yards-per-carry average, totaling 160 rushing yards against Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

Playing in all 13 games, Torain's 223 carries on the year are the most by a Sun Devil since J.R. Redmond in 1999 (241).  He also added 18 catches for 205 yards (11.4 avg.) and three touchdowns.

Torain was one of only three first-year players named either First or Second-Team All-Pac-10 this season, joining Mike Gibson and Andrew Larson of California.

Torain and the Sun Devils closed out the 2006 season on Dec. 24, falling to the Hawaii Warriors 41-24 in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
