Five Pac-10 Teams Among Top 25

WASHINGTON STATE cracks the Top 25 for the first time since 1983 as it steps in at No. 23 in the USA Today/ESPN poll and is tied for No. 22 in the AP poll ... With WASHINGTON holding on to the No. 24 spot in the Coaches' poll, it's the first time that both Huskies and Cougars appear in either poll at the same time. Both made appearances in the 1949-50 AP poll, but never together during the same week ... It's the first time since 2001-02 that five Pac-10 teams appear in the polls ... Oregon's Aaron Brooks Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

OREGON guard Aaron Brooks has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for January 1-7.

Brooks, a senior from Seattle, Wash., averaged 28.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds in leading the Ducks to a split with the Los Angeles schools. He opened the week with 31 points in a 84-82 loss to USC. He shot 11-of-18 (.611) from the field, including 6-of-9 (.667) from three-point range, and added five assists and three steals. In the 68-66 win over previous-No. 1 UCLA, Brooks scored 25 points on 9-of-13 (.692) shooting from the field, including the game-winning jumper with :13 seconds remaining. He added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. For the week, he shot 20-of-31 (.645) from the field, 7-of-10 (.700) from three-point range, and 9-of-11 (.818) from the free throw line. His 56-point weekend helped Brooks take over the Pac-10's scoring lead at 18.1 points per game.

This is the first weekly honor for Brooks and Oregon's 26th Player of the Week all-time.


• 30-Something Freshman Fact... Stanford's Robin Lopez (31 blocks/2.38 bpg), Washington's Spencer Hawes (31 blocks/2.07 bpg), and USC's Taj Gibson (32 blocks/1.89 bpg) rank 1-2-3 in the Pac-10 in blocked shots.

• The last time the Pac-10 had five teams ranked in the Top 25 came on March 5, 2002. Here's a look at where those Pac-10 teams ranked:

• ARIZONA shot 36-of-39 (.923) from the free throw line in its two games in Washington last week. Senior G Mustafa Shakur was a perfect 16-of-16 from the line last week. In fact he's a perfect 22-of-22 in Pac-10 play and has made 24 consecutive free throws ... Over the last 12 games, UA has outscored the opposition by a 223-65 margin from the charity stripe - or an average of 18.6-5.4 points per game ... Over the last four games, ARIZONA sophomore F Marcus Williams is shooting a combined 36-of-55 (.655) from the field, averaging 21 points per game ... Shakur posted a season-high tying 11 assists at Washington and is averaging 9.3 assists over the past four games ... Arizona hosts Oregon State on Thursday having defeated the Beavers 24 straight times in Tucson. The last OSU victory in Tucson was a 72-54 decision during the 1982-83 season - the year prior to Coach Lute Olson's arrival in the Old Pueblo.

• ARIZONA STATE sophomore Jeff Pendergraph shot 16-of-21 (.762) from the field during the Sun Devils roadswing through Washington, and averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. He's averaging a double-double in the past nine games (14.1 points and 10.1 boards) ... Pendergraph leads the Pac-10 in offensive rebounds, averaging 4.47 per game ... Freshman G Derek Glasser has started each of the last six games. The last two games, he's averaging 10.0 points/4.0 assists ... Freshman G Christian Polk has 34 three-pointers on the year. The ASU freshman record is 66 set by Ron Riley (1992-93).

• CALIFORNIA senior G Ayinde Ubaka scored a season-best 26 points as the Golden Bears snapped a 13-game losing streak in Maples Pavilion with a 67-63 victory over Stanford ... Cal is shooting 33-of-81 (.407) from three-point range over the last three games ... Sophomore F Theo Robertson has played in 84 of a possible 85 minutes over the last two games, However, its Ubaka and freshman F Ryan Anderson that lead the Bears in minutes played, averaging 34.4 and 31.9 minutes respectively. Those figures rank third and 10th in the Pac-10 ... Due to injuries, Cal is down to nine scholarship players, including four freshmen ... Cal has won four straight over Washington State and 10 of the last 11 meetings in the Bay Area.

• OREGON is off to its best start since the 1937-38 team, which also went 14-1 ... Prior to last Saturday's win, the last time the Ducks beat the nation's top-ranked team was Feb. 16, 1974. The Ducks stunned UCLA 56-51 in that game. Coach Ernie Kent, a shooting guard on that 1974 squad, made a brief appearance in that victory ... Junior F Maarty Leunen has pulled down seven or more rebounds in 14 of 15 games this season. He's posted 10 or more rebounds in seven games. Over the last four games, Leunen is averaging 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds, while shooting 22-of-40 (.550) from the field ... The Ducks hit the road for games at Arizona State and Arizona this week. Oregon is 3-0 on the road this season after posting road records of 3-9 last year and 3-7 during the 2004-05 season. Oregon is on the road for six of its next eight games.

• OREGON STATE looks to snap a three-game losing streak, it's longest of the season ... Freshman G Josh Tarver played all 80 minutes in the first two conference games for the Beavers. He leads the squad averaging 32.3 minutes played per game - that's eighth in the Pac-10 and second among all Pac-10 freshmen behind Arizona's Chase Budinger (33.0 mpg) ... The Beavers picked up a transfer this week as C.J. Giles, a 6-11, 240-pound center originally from Seattle has transferred from Kansas. Giles averaged 6.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks last season as a sophomore.

• STANFORD freshmen F Robin Lopez is shooting 18-of-33 (.545) from the field over the last three games, averaging 15.0 points and 7.3 rebounds ... Over the last two games, senior F Fred Washington is averaging 11.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists ... The Cardinal has won 50 of its last 59 games at Maples Pavilion dating back to the 2002-03 season ... Stanford will host Washington Thursday. The Cardinal have won 13 straight over the Huskies in Maples Pavilion with the last Washington win at Stanford coming during the 1992-93 season ... While the Cardinal have played in several non-conference neutral-site games in the eastern time zone, last Sunday's game at Virginia was the first road game in the eastern time zone since the 1997-98 season (at Connecticut).

• UCLA Junior G Arron Afflalo has scored in double figures in each of the last 14 games, and is averaging 16.3 points per game this season ... Sophomore F Josh Shipp has scored in double figures in each of the last 11 games, averaging 15.7 points over that span ... Sophomore G Darren Collison has posted double digits in each of the last nine games and is averaging 13.4 points during that span ... Collison is second in the league averaging 6.2 assists per game. The last time a UCLA player averaged better than six assists per game was Tyus Edney in 1994-95 with 6.8 per game ... The last time UCLA lost on the road to a ranked team - last year at No. 23 Washington, then followed that with a loss at USC. The Bruins then went on to win 12 straight and reached the NCAA title game.

• USC junior F Nick Young is shooting 50-of-76 (.658) over the last seven games, averaging 18.1 points over that span ... Freshman F Taj Gibson posted seven blocks at Oregon. The USC single-game record is eight, set by three different players. Gibson has 32 rejections for the season and is within sight of the school's freshman record of 43 set by Ken Johnson in 1982. In addition to his block numbers at Oregon, Gibson scored 15 points and added 13 rebounds for his league-leading eighth double-double ... Senior G Lodrick Stewart scored a career-high 28 points and was 9-of-10 from the field at OSU, He hit all six of his three-point attempts, a new school record for most makes without a miss. He hit 14-of-19 (.737) from the field and 9-of-12 three-pointers (.750) during the weekend.

• WASHINGTON sophomore F Jon Brockman has posted double digit rebound totals in five of the last six games, averaging 10.8 rebounds over that span ... Junior G Ryan Appleby is shooting 15-of-29 (.517) from three-point range in four Pac-10 games ... The Huskies shook up the starting lineup for their game against Arizona, inserting freshman F Phil Nelson into the lineup for his first career start. Nelson responded with a career-high 16 points, shooting 6-of-8 (.750) from the field, including 4-of-5 (.800) from three-point range. Prior to the Arizona game, Nelson was shooting 11-of-44 (.250) from long distance.

• With the win over No. 7 Arizona, WASHINGTON STATE defeated its highest ranked opponent since March 7, 1983 when it knocked off No. 6 UCLA 70-68 in Pullman ... The victory also completed the first home sweep of a Pac-10 series since Feb. 15/17, 2001 against Oregon and Oregon State ... Sophomore F Daven Harmeling stepped up big for the Cougars last week, scoring 13 points in their win over Arizona State, then posted a career-high 28 points as he hit 7-of-11 (.636) from three-point range in the upset of previous No. 7 Arizona ... Harmeling was shooting 14-of-38 (.368) from three-point range in non-conference play, but has hit 12-of-20 (.600) from beyond the arc in Pac-10 play ... Junior G Kyle Weaver recorded his second career double-double, both in the last four games, with 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Wildcats. He also added seven assists, three steals, and two blocks.
