Huskies Look Strong in Hawai'i

Maui, Hawai'i -- The Husky women's tennis team got their 2007 season off to a stellar start by winning six of seven matches in first day action of a three-team tournament in Maui, Hawai'i.

In Flight One action, the tournament's No. 2 seed Tara Simpson beat Hawai'i's Jacqui Williams 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. Mathilde Cor, making her collegiate debut for the Huskies, needed three sets to advance to the semifinals. Cor, the No. 4 seed, beat Luba Schrifis of Sacramento State 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Melinda Wong drew the No. 1 seed Katrina Bandere of Sacramento State and suffered the only Husky defeat of the day, falling 6-3, 6-4.

The Huskies were perfect in the Flight Two singles action. No. 2 seed junior Allison Rainey beat Hawai'i's Julia Sandborn 6-0, 6-2, while the four seed, Joyce Ardies, came from behind to beat Karina Jarkganova of Sacramento State 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Both Washington doubles teams advanced to the semifinals, thanks to wins by the No. 1 seeds Cor and Ardies and No. 4 seeds Simpson and Wong.
