WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- CALIFORNIA sophomore forward/center Devanei Hampton has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 8-14, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Hampton, a native of Oakland, Calif., averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games as the Golden Bears defeated Washington State and Washington, marking the first-ever road sweep of the two schools and the first time since the 2000-01 season that Cal swept a Pac-10 road trip. On the week, she shot 69.6 percent from the field (16-of-23), 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the foul line, while hitting her first three-pointer of the season against the Huskies.
In the nationally-televised 72-49 win over Washington, Hampton tallied game highs of 25 points (two shy of matching her career high) and eight rebounds, while shooting 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the floor.
In Thursday's 55-48 defensive battle with Washington State, Hampton posted her second double-double of the season, registering 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. She recorded eight of Cal's first 10 points to give the Bears a 10-8 lead over the Cougars with under nine minutes to play in the first half.
California (13-4 overall, 4-3 Pac-10) is tied for its third-best start in school history through 17 games and is off to its best start since the 1992-93 team opened at 13-4. The Bears will next face Oregon State on Thurs., Jan. 18 and Oregon on Sat., Jan. 20.
