Cougar Track & Field Hosts WSU Open Indoor Meet

COUGARS DON THE UNIFORM FOR INDOOR TRACK OPENER: Washington State University's indoor track and field teams open the 2007 season with the Fifth Annual WSU Indoor Open...the WSU Indoor Facility's Mondo track will feature racing at 60m, 200m, 400m, mile, 800m and 3000m with 60m hurdles as well as a co-ed 4x400m relay...jumping and throwing field events will be contested on the turf inside the's 35-pound and women's 20-pound weight throws take place Friday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m...remaining field events will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 10 a.m...complete results will be posted on the WSU Athletics website,, following the meet's completion.

WANT TO COMPETE? OR JUST WATCH: All competitors are to register online no later than noon, Jan. 17, at for a $10 entry fee...late entries will be charged an additional $10 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators may watch Friday's and Saturday's events free of parking is available in the small Green Lot to the south of Indoor Practice Facility or behind and below the IPF.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Cougar women's team is ranked 18th in the Trackwire Top 25 ( pair of Cougars have been included in Trackwire Online's Dandy Dozen first list of the 2007 indoor season...the Dandy Dozen is, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event...All-American multi-events specialists Julie Picker (2nd) and Diana Pickler (3rd)...WSU's men are not ranked.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 34th season with the Cougar track program; 13th year as a head coach, 12th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former WSU All-American pole vaulter Tamara Diles is a volunteer assistant coach this season.

RETURNING COUGAR WSU OPEN CHAMPIONS: Seven WSU women and three Cougar men who won events at the 2006 WSU Open will be competing in the 2007 meet - La Shawnda Porter (60m & 200m), Brandi Probasco-Canda (400m), Collier Lawrence (mile), Sara Trané (800m), Catie Schuetzle (long jump), Sarah Burns (triple jump), Diana Pickler (high jump), Jarrell Nelson (200m), Devin Timpson (400m), Evan Blanshan (mile), and Robert Williams (60m hurdles)...Paul's 800m time of 2:14.40i was a meet record...D. Pickler's high jump of 1.78m/5-10, Trané's 800m time of 2:13.30, and Schuetzle's long jump of 5.81m/19-0 3/4 were all meet records.

COUGARS AND THE MPSF INDOOR HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for an indoor track conference title, joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...MPSF teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 Men's Teams include: 5. Oregon, 11. Washington, 16. UCLA, 18. Arizona State, 22. Stanford...MPSF teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 Women's Teams include: 1. Stanford, 2. Arizona State, 14. Washington, 18. Washington State, 21. Oregon, 23. the 2006 MPSF Indoor Championships, Cougar women finished eighth while the men were ninth.

ABOUT THE COUGAR WOMEN: Leading the Cougar women are All-Americans Diana Pickler and Julie Pickler(mulit-events) and distance specialist Haley Paul...other WSU women returnees with NCAA experience includes Brandi Probasco-Canda in the 400m dash, and McKinnon Hanson in the high jump...additional veterans returning with Pac-10 scoring on their resumes include Sara Trané in the 400m hurdles, McKenzie Garberg in the discus, Sarah Burns and Kaylee Gardner in the triple jump, Collier Lawrence and Kayle Peterson in the steeplechase, and Kelly Ramirez in the 10,000m...newcomers with champions on their resumes includes freshmen Princess Joy Griffey, Washington state 2005 champ in the 100m and 200m dashes, and Lisa Egami, 800m junior champion from British Columbia...additionally, freshman Chelsea VanDeBrake had an impressive cross country debut season in a Cougar uniform.

ABOUT THE COUGAR MEN: Returning outdoor All-Americans for the Cougar men includes pole vaulter Tyson Byers, intermediate hurdler John Cassleman. and discus thrower Matt Lamb...Byers has battled injuries throughout his WSU career but begins this season in top form and looks to reprise his 2005 height of 17-8 1/2 and leap higher...Cassleman is coming off his best season ever with several sub-50-seconds races at the end of 2006...Lamb had an outstanding freshman year, reaching third place in the discus at both the NCAA and Pac-10 Championships and wrestling the school's freshman record away from Olympian Ian Waltz with a toss of newcomers with championship titles joined the WSU men's team this year including freshmen from the state of Washington Trent Arrivey, a 7-foot high jumper (Woodinville); Kyle Schauble, a decathlete with high and low hurdles crowns (Kennewick); and Luke Lemenager, an 800m winner (Maple Valley)...out-of-state champs include Bob Hewitt-Gaffney, a 400m and 800m winner from Wyoming, Dan Geib, a 1600m and 3200m titlest from Nevada, and Nathan Bache, a javelin winner from Montana...junior decathlete Rickey Moody brings the NWAACC titles in long jump and decathlon (Puyallup).
