Track Teams Ranked in Top-15 of Debut Poll
Jan. 16, 2007
SEATTLE - Washington's track and field teams debuted strong Tuesday in the initial Trackwire team and individual rankings of the 2007 season, with both Husky squads earning top-15 national rankings, and senior Ashley Lodree claiming the No. 1 spot in the women's hurdles.
The Trackwire 25 ranks teams weekly based on projected scores at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships. Team scores are derived from Trackwire's Dandy Dozen, a weekly projection of the top-12 finishers in each event at the NCAA meet.
Both Husky squads earned their highest indoor rankings of the decade, with Washington's men being placed in a tie for 11th nationally with South Carolina, and the Husky women sharing No. 14 honors with Auburn and Nebraska. Defending NCAA outdoor champion Florida State opened the year No. 1 on the men's side with 56 points, while Pac-10 rivals Stanford and ASU are listed 1-2 in the women's rankings, scoring 55 and 43 points, respectively,
Senior Ashley Lodree, meanwhile, earned a No. 1 national ranking in the 60-meter hurdles, where she is a four-time All-American and one of the nation's fastest returnees. Lodree placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships in June, and has finished as high as fifth in five-career NCAA Championships appearances.
Numerous other Huskies earned high acclaim in the Dandy Dozen, including defending NCAA champions Ryan Brown (second at 800 meters) and Amy Lia (3rd in the mile). Freshman pole vaulter Scott Roth, who debuted last Saturday with a freshman-record performance at the UW Indoor Preview, made his Dandy Dozen debut at No. 6, while fellow vaulters Stevie Marshalek and Kelley DiVesta were ranked 10th and 12th, respectively, on the women's side.
Junior Norris Frederick, who posted NCAA qualifying marks in both the high- and long jumps this weekend, earned national rankings in both, including a No. 8 nod in the high jump and a No. 12 mention in the long jump.
Lastly, Washington's 4x400-meter and distance medley relay teams were each recognized as well, earning No. 10 and No. 6 national rankings, respectively. Both were top-five finishers at last March's NCAA Indoor meet.
