No. 1 Women's Tennis Opens Season Thursday With UC Davis

Jan. 23, 2007

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 1 Stanford will put its 86-match winning streak on the line later this week, hosting UC Davis and No. 21 Fresno State at the Taube Tennis Center to kick off the 2007 dual match season.

The Cardinal, coming off its third consecutive NCAA title and fifth in six seasons overall, has not lost a match since a 4-3 runner-up finish to Florida in the 2003 NCAA Championship in Gainesville, Fla.

At the helm for all five of those NCAA titles has been head coach Lele Forood, who enters her seventh year on The Farm. Along with longtime assistant coach Frankie Brennan, Forood has compiled a gaudy 168-3 record.

Forood appears to again be in good shape with this year's squad, which features three returning All-Americans: seniors Theresa Logar and Anne Yelsey and junior Celia Durkin.

Logar and Durkin, along with sophomore Jessica Nguyen and freshman Lindsay Burdette, are nationally-ranked in singles. Three Cardinal doubles teams are ranked in the top-50: Durkin and Nguyen, Logar and Durkin, and Deason and Doheny.

Stanford opens the week on Thursday, Jan. 25, against UC Davis at 1:30 p.m. The Aggies suffered a 5-2 defeat to Arizona State in their season opener. The following day, the Cardinal hosts No. 21 Fresno State, a squad that hung close in a 5-2 dual match loss in the 2006 season opener.
