Women's Tennis Rolls Past Cal Poly, 6-1
Jan. 23, 2007
LOS ANGELES - The 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team cruised past its second non-conference opponent in less than a week on Tuesday, as the Bruins posted a 6-1 victory over visiting Cal Poly at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA, which moves to 2-0 on the year, opened up the 2007 season last Friday with a 7-0 win over Hawai'i. With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 0-2 on the year.
The Bruins got things started in doubles play, as 17th-ranked Yasmin Schnack and Riza Zalameda didn't surrender a single game en route to an 8-0 victory over Cal Poly's Carol Erickson/Steffi Wong at court No. 1. UCLA's other two doubles teams followed suit, dropping just three games in victories at court Nos. 2 and 3.
The Bruins' strong performance in doubles set the tone for singles play, where four UCLA players won in straight sets. First to finish was court No. 4, where senior Alex McGoodwin was nearly flawless in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Diane Filip. Zalameda was next to finish at court No. 1, as she overpowered Erickson 6-2, 6-0 for her first dual-match win of the season. Erickson is the daughter of former UCLA All-American and AIAW singles champion Jeanne Duvall.
Sophomore Ashley Joelson (court No. 3) and junior Elizabeth Lumpkin (court No. 5) were also straight-set winners. Freshman Stephanie Wetmore showed tremendous fight at court No. 6, battling back from a set down to eventually defeat Shannon Brady, 4-6, 6-0, (10-6).
Cal Poly's lone win on the afternoon came at court No. 2, where Brittany Blalock upset Schnack, 6-3, 6-3. Schnack, who has been nursing an injury, did not play in the Bruins' opener against Hawai'I last week.
Next up for UCLA is the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, Feb. 1-4, in Madison, Wisc. The draw for the tournament will be announced on Monday.
