USC Women Open With Sweep of Long Beach State
Jan. 24, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 3-ranked USC women's tennis team got out of the gates on a hot streak, posting a 7-0 win over visiting No. 27 Long Beach State in the Trojans' dual match opener at Marks Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. After a solid performance in doubles, the Women of Troy turned to singles play and cruised through with two-set victories across the board. Now. 1-0 on the 2007 season, USC next faces No. 14 Pepperdine at noon on Saturday (Jan. 27) at Marks Stadium.
No. 23-ranked doubles duo Sarah Fansler / Dianne Matias jumped out to a 6-0 lead over their LBSU opponents at the No. 3 doubles slot, dropping a single game when the 49ers held serve to make it 6-1. But that was all Fansler/Matias would give away, as the pair posted an 8-1 win to secure the first doubles win for USC. At the No. 2 position, No. 15-ranked Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink locked away the doubles point for the Trojans when DeVera served through deuce and Fink put away the match-winning shot at the net to win 8-3. At No. 1 doubles, the ITA West Regional champions Anca Anastasiu / Julie Smekodub beat LBSU's No. 48-ranked Grady/Weeks pair 8-3 to gather some extra momentum for singles play.
Julie Smekodub's doubles win carried over into a solid singles performance at the No. 6 position, as she dropped Rachel Porsz 6-0, 6-1 to give USC its second point of the match. Next to win was #46 Dianne Matias at No. 3, beating Stephanie Bengson 6-1, 6-2. Anca Anastasiu secured the dual match win for the Trojans with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jessica Weeks at No. 4. The Women of Troy remained in control to finish off the win with three more singles victories. At No. 2, Amanda Fink held off a comeback attempt by Katy Williams to grab a 6-1, 6-4 win. Freshman Sarah Fansler - ranked #9 nationally - tacked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over LBSU's Hannah Grady at the No. 1 singles position. At the No. 5 slot, #96 Judy DeVera battled through the tightest set of the match, pulling out a tiebreaker victory in the first set before regaining control in the second on the way to a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win that rounded out USC's 7-0 decision.
No. 3 USC returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 27) with a home match against No. 14 Pepperdine at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
