No. 9 Stanford Opens Dual Match Season vs. No. 25 Boise State
Jan. 26, 2007
Stanford begins the 2007 season on Saturday, January 27 with a non-conference match against Boise State at the Taube Tennis Center beginning at 1:00 pm. The Cardinal opens the season ranked No. 9 in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings while the Broncos are No. 25. Stanford, of course, is coming off a 2006 season that saw the Cardinal finish 18-4 overall while advancing to the NCAA quarter-finals.
'I can't wait to get the season going,' said John Whitlinger, who is beginning his third season as Stanford's head coach. 'We have a very young team that will feature several several freshman and sophomores in the starting lineup.
'This is a very tough first match,' he said of facing Boise State. 'They are a quality team and I expect the match to be very close,' he said.
The Cardinal's starting lineup will be led by sophomore Matt Bruch, who earned All-America honors last year. Other possible starters include freshmen Richard Wire, Paul Morrissey and Kevin Kaiser, junior Blake Muller and senior Eric McKean along with sophomore Jeff Zeller and seniors Phil Kao and David Ryan.
Stanford will be without the services of senior James Wan, a three-year starter with a career record of 79-24. Wan will not compete for the Cardinal in 2007.
'James is not 100 percent healthy and has decided to take the year off,' said Whitlinger. 'He has been a terrific player for us the past three seasons and his absence will be missed by our team.'
Following Saturday's match, Stanford will play its next three dual matches on the road against No. 43 USC, No. 4 UCLA and No. 2 Baylor before competing in the national indoors Feb. 16-19.
