Watkins, Creary and Bohannon Notch NCAA Qualifiers in Seattle
Jan. 27, 2007
The UCLA women's track and field team opened up the 2007 indoor season with a bang on Saturday as Rhonda Watkins, Keneisha Creary and Allie Bohannon picked up NCAA qualifying marks to lead the Bruins at the Washington Invitational in Seattle.
Watkins, the 2006 World Junior Long Jump Champion, was competing in the first indoor season of her career at UCLA and showed why she will be in contention for All-American honors in both indoor and outdoor track this season. The sophomore tied for first with an NCAA provisional mark of 20-9 (6.32m), just 8 cm shy of the automatic qualifier. The mark will most likely rank in the top-five, if not top-three, in the nation next week.
Bohannon, who is coming off of an MVP season in cross country, is off to a fast start in the indoor season with her NCAA provisional mile time of 4:43.43. The mark is just three seconds shy of the automatic time and should rank in the top-10 in the country next week.
Creary, a transfer from Southwest Missouri Christian College, jumped a provisional qualifier in the high jump of 5-10, a mark that placed second overall.
Junior Renee Williams also had a strong start to the season with her second-place finish in the triple jump (41-0.50) and fourth-place finish in the long jump (19-6.75).
One performance of note was junior Leslie Rychel in the long jump, who won the 'B' section with a lifetime-best mark of 19-2.75.
