USC Women Get 6-1 Win Over Pepperdine

Jan. 28, 2007

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Despite a rain delay that postponed USC's match with Pepperdine for a day, the Women of Troy emerged victorious on the second day of action with a 6-1 win over the Waves on Sunday at Marks Stadium. USC led three tight doubles matches on Saturday until rain interrupted play and pushed the remainder of the action to Sunday. Once resumed, USC grabbed the doubles point and proceeded to reel off five straight singles wins to ensure victory for the No. 3-ranked Trojans. USC improves to 2-0 with the win, while No. 14 Pepperdine moves to 2-1.

After Sarah Fansler / Dianne Matias earned an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink secured the doubles point for the Women of Troy with a tightly won 9-8 (4) victory at the No. 2 position. Pepperdine's Kosakowski/Dickes edged out USC's Lindsey Nelson / Julie Smekodub in a similarly close match, winning 9-7 at No. 1.

In singles play, Dianne Matias set the Trojans off on a winning note with a smooth 6-1, 6-1 victory over Caroline Raba at the No. 4 position. #9 Sarah Fansler was next to secure a win for USC with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Sylvia Kosakowski, and then Amanda Fink locked down the win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Pepperdine's Anna Sabate. With the match in hand 4-0, USC didn't back down, getting three-set wins out of Julie Smekodub and Anca Anastasiu. Both Women of Troy dropped their second set, but came back strong in the third to post their respective victories. Smekodub won out first, beating Jillian Braverman 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6, and then Anastasiu tacked up a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Eva Dickes at No. 5. The No. 1 singles match still raged on, however, as Lindsey Nelson faced Pepperdine's #22 Bianca Dulgheru. Dulgheru got the win for the Waves' lone point of the match, topping Nelson 6-4, 6-2 to end the action at Marks Stadium.

USC returns to action with a trip to San Diego for a 1:30 p.m. match against the Toreros on Thurday (Feb. 1).
