COUGARS HEAD TO THE DESERT: The Washington State men's basketball team (No. 18 Associated Press/No. 17 ESPN/USA Today) heads to Tucson to play Arizona (No.20 Associated Press/ No. 22 ESPN/USA Today), Thursday, Feb. 1 at 6:30 p.m. MST/5:30 p.m. PST...plays Arizona State in Tempe, Saturday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 p.m. MST/4:30 p.m. PST.

WASHINGTON STATE ON TELEVISION: Both games this week will be televised...Thursday's match-up will be carried by FSN Northwest and FSN Arizona...Saturday's game will be aired on FOX Sports Net.

COUGAR HEAD COACH Tony Bennett: Washington State Head Coach Tony Bennett is in his first season at the helm of the Cougar program...fourth year with WSU...assistant coach in 2003-04...associate head coach in 2004-05 and 2005-06...assistant coach at Wisconsin from 2000-03...became the first head coach at a current Pacific-10 institution to start 7-0 in his inaugural campaign at the school since Stanford's Robert W. Burnett was 9-0 in 1951-52...Bennett's accomplishment is tied for the third best start in a debut season at Pac-10 school in the post-World War II era.

ABOUT ARIZONA: The Wildcats are currently sixth in the Pacific-10 at 5-4, and are 14-6 overall...ranked in both the Associated Press, 20th, and ESPN/USA Today, 22nd, polls...coming off head coach Lute Olson's worst loss in Tucson, 92-64, to then- No. 4 North Carolina...Wildcats lead the Pac-10 in scoring offense at 80.6 points per game...Marcus Williams in second in the conference with 21.9 points per outing...Mustafa Shakur at 7.78 assists per game and Ivan Radenovic 94.7 percent free throw shooting lead the Pac-10.

SERIES WITH THE WILDCATS: Arizona leads the series 48-12 and own a 23-6 record in Tucson...Washington State won the first meeting this season knocking off then-No.7 Arizona, 77-73, in overtime...Cougars defeated the their highest ranked opponent since 1983...Daven Harmeling led all scorers as he tallied a career-high 28 points including seven 3-pointers...victory was Washington State's first overtime win since 2000...snapped a 20-game home losing streak to the Wildcats....Cougars have never been ranked when competing against Arizona.

THIS DATE IN COUGAR HISTORY (Feb. 1): The Cougars are currently 13-9 when competing Feb. 1 including a 2-3 record on the 1996, Washington State recorded its largest road win against Arizona State as it handed the Sun-Devils a 14-point defeat, 72-58...Cougars led 32-28 at intermission on the strength of a 10-0 run early in the first half...Sun Devils led briefly at 43-42 in the second half before the Cougars took control holding Arizona State to just six points in the final seven minutes of play...four players tallied double-figure scoring for WSU led by Isaac Fontaine's 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half....WSU finished the season in the second round of the NIT (18-11), marking the Cougars last postseason appearance to date.

ABOUT THE SUN DEVILS: Arizona State is 6-14, 0-9 in Pac-10 play (hosts Washington, Thursday) under first year head coach Herb Sendek...currently on a 10 game losing streak...last win came Dec. 21, over North Carolina A&T, 71-66...first time Arizona State has gone winless through the first half of conference play since it entered the Pac-10 in 1978-79...two players are averaging double-figure scoring...freshman Christian Polk and sophomore Jeff Pendergraph are both putting up 12.7 points per game...Pendergraph has recorded seven double-doubles this season and leads his team in rebounding at 8.8 boards per game.

THIS DATE IN COUGAR HISTORY (Feb. 3): Washington State is 12-11 when competing Feb. 3, including a 6-7 mark on the 1979, head coach George Raveling led his Cougars to their first win at Washington since 1975 and their second victory in Seattle in 10 years...Cougars were coming off two tough losses at the L.A. schools that greatly reduced their chances of a postseason appearance...despite a four-point Husky advantage at halftime, Washington State battled back to take down the Huskies, 65-56...Bryan Rison led all scorers with 19 points while Don Collins (17) and Terry Kelly (15) also scored in double-figures...James Donaldson added 12 rebounds helping him reach his season total of 281, ninth best by a Cougar overall and fourth highest by a WSU senior.

COUGARS EARN NATIONAL RANKING: Washington State is currently ranked No.18 in the Associated Press poll and No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Today...WSU is among the nation's best for the seventh straight week...Cougars began receiving votes after upsetting then-No. 18 Gonzaga, 77-67 Dec. 5...earned first AP ranking (No. 22, Jan. 8) since Feb. 1983...first time since 1950 (Feb. 7 and Feb. 14 polls) WSU has been ranked by Associated Press in back-to-back weeks...only other times Cougars were ranked in three AP polls at any time during the season were 1948-49 and 1949-50.
