No. 13 Oklahoma Downs Sun Devil Wrestling, 31-9

Feb. 2, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University wrestling team put up a fight, but in the end, the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners took the dual, winning a 31-9 decision over the host Sun Devils Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. The Sun Devils, who earned three individual wins in the event, slipped to 6-11 overall on the year while the visiting Sooners improved to 9-4.

Opening at 125 pounds, the Sun Devils struck first at John Espinoza won a 7-3 decision over Henry Roman, staking the hosts to a 3-0 lead. The visitors tied the team score at 133 pounds when Brian Shelton won a 10-4 decision over Shawn Jones in a battle of two true freshman. Oklahoma took the lead after the 141 pound bout as Kyle Terry scored an 8-1 decision over Robert Galvan, pushing the team score to 6-3. From there, the Sooners won the next two bouts by forfeit, pushing the advantage to 18-3.

Looking to halt the momentum, Patrick Pitsch made his return to the mats for the first time in three weeks and scored a 9-4 upset of No. 11 Shane Seibert in the 165 pound bout. With the bout tied at four heading into the third and final period, Pitsch chose neutral and, with 39 seconds remaining, took Seibert down to his back, scoring five points and the upset win. The Sooners quickly took the momentum back, however, as No. 8 Josh Weitzel pinned ASU's Alex Pavlenko at 2:08, pushing the OU lead to 24-6.

Greg Gifford, who has been coming on strong of late, continued to shine in his senior season by scoring a tough 9-6 decision at 184. Holding a slim 5-4 lead heading into the final period, Gifford gave up a takedown to tie the score at six before escaping and finishing on top with a takedown of his own for the win. The final two bouts saw Jason Trulson fall to No. 6 Joel Flaggert, 9-3, before heavyweight Thor Moen dropped a 14-3 major decision to Brad Farmer.

The Sun Devils will have over one week off until their next dual as they play host to Cal Poly on Sunday, Feb. 11, in a 2 p.m. Pac-10 Conference dual in Tempe. The dual will be the home finale for the Sun Devils.
