USC Beats Long Beach State, 2-1, Thanks To Darren Gemoll's Pinch Hit

Feb. 2, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Darren Gemoll's (San Jose/College of San Mateo) pinch-hit single in the seventh provided the go-ahead run Friday as the USC Trojans defeated the Long Beach State 49ers, 2-1, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. Trojan closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) picked up his second save in as many games and is now tied for third on USC's all-time list with 22 career saves.

USC (2-0) mustered only two hits off Long Beach State starter Vance Worley until the sixth inning when Nick Buss lined a two-out single to center, followed by Grant Green's RBI triple to right to tie the game at 1-1.

Green had a 2-for-4 day for the second straight game and now has three RBI on the early season.

The Trojans once again scored with two outs thanks to Gemoll's heroics. USC third baseman Hector Estrella walked, followed by freshman catcher Robert Stock's first collegiate hit with a single up the middle. Gemoll then singled to right to plate the game-winner for the Trojans.

Robert Perry hit a two-out triple to left for the 49ers in the third and scored when Allen Woods hit a hard ground ball off Estrella's glove for the early 1-0 lead before the Trojans came back.

Shawn Olsen (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Trojans with two innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Both starters lasted six innings as Worley allowed one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts while USC sophomore Ryan Cook allowed one run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The series continues tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start at Blair Field in Long Beach with the series concluding on Sunday (Feb. 4) with a noon start at Dedeaux Field. Both games will be broadcast on with a live video webcast for Sunday's game.
