No. 4 UCLA Hands Cardinal 7-0 Loss

Feb. 3, 2007

Stanford saw its record dip to 0-3 today after being shutout by fourth-ranked UCLA, 7-0 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Cardinal, which lost 5-2 at USC yesterday, came into the match ranked No. 19 in the country. The Bruins were led by defending NCAA champion Benjamin Kohlloeffel, who beat Stanford's Matt Bruch at No. 1 singles.

It was the Bruin's fifth consecutive shutout to open the 2007 season and it was the first time Stanford had been shutout since losing 7-0 to No. 1 ranked Baylor on March 23, 2005. The loss also marks the Cardinal's first three-match losing skid since losing four straight during the 2005 season.

Kohlloeffel came into the match ranked No. 5 in the country. Bruch, who did not play during the fall and is not included in the national rankings, lost twice to Kohlloeffel last season. Bruch, an All-American last season, lost in straight sets today, 6-2, 6-1.

In double play, Stanford's No. 3 team of Eric McKean and Jeff Zeller scored an impressive win as they beat Mathieu Dehaine and Jeremy Drean, the No. 18 doubles team in the country, by an 8-3 score. The Bruins, however, won the doubles point and the first five singles match in straight sets to record the win. The clinching match came at No. 5 where UCLA's Philipp Gruendler beat Stanford freshman Kevin Kaiser, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, with the match already clinched for the Bruins, Cardinal freshman Richard Wire took UCLA's Haythem Abid to a tie-break in the third set. Abid won the first set 6-4, then Wire came back to tie the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. In the 10-point tie-break, Abid edged Wire 10-8 to clinch the match. It was the only match of the day that went three sets as the Bruins won the other five singles matches in straight sets.

The road does not get any easier for the Cardinal. Stanford's next match is Feb. 11 vs. No. 2 ranked Baylor in Waco, Texas. The Cardinal will then travel to Chicago to play in the National Team Indoors Feb. 16-19 against the top teams in the country.
